The next day Charlie drove back to Perth: the same long, two-day drive, and it made him realise the importance of the runway. The original plan was to have just a dirt runway, like many outback airstrips in Australia. Light planes could land on them with no trouble, and all the maintenance required was to run a grader over them once a week. But to land larger jets, a sealed runway was necessary, particularly in the wet season when dirt could turn into soft mud. Sealing a 2.5-kilometre-long runway wasn’t going to be cheap, but it would be worth it, and it would pay for itself over time. If they could land big jets at Mt Robertson, it would be much easier to get men to and from the mine, and they would need that if they were going to start rotating shifts. It would also be possible to fly up urgent machinery parts in heavy cargo jets. He made a mental note to chase it up back in Perth.

The long drive gave Charlie time to think about finances. His own funds were running out and he would probably need to call on at least some of the bank’s $80 million, and for that he needed to get the mining permits approved.
